08.16.10 :: ASK MATTY - MATTEL Q&A ANSWERS FOR 8/15 |
Special thanks to Matty Mattel for taking the time to answer these questions: |
DC Universe Classics > Is there a possibility that we could get a usable Lasso of Truth that is not molded onto their belt permanently if for Wonder Woman, Wonder Girl & Artemis are ever re-issued? |
Yes, it is possible but no plans at this time. |
DC Universe Infinite Heroes > The updated bodies for DC Infinite Heroes look great! However the females still lack elbow joints and other articulation that the men have. Will the females be further updated to have the same articulation as the guys? Wonder Woman could use some elbow joints for her bullets & bracelets posing. |
We are constantly working on improving the deco and articulation of all figures at all scales and this is something we are looking at. We want our figures to be the best! |
DC Super Friends > Any plans or interest in producing a blank female buck for your Super Friends line? One key member is missing from the set.
Right now Super Friends is found in the Imaginex Fisher-Price line and females really are not big with the infant age group for which this line is targeted. We understand some collectors also buy this line, but they make up a small segment of the Imaginex customers compared to moms and kids. Females are tough for us to do in a line like this. Maybe one day. |
Retro-Action DC Super Heroes > First, we LOVE the Wave 3 Wonder Woman and Cheetah - thank you! We understand that the figures shown at SDCC were prototypes with hand-made costumes. Specifically with Wonder Woman, we learned that her bodice had been pulled too tight, making it look more like a tank top. When can we see studio photos of this Wave showing how they are intended to look in production?
Hopefully new shots will be ready by the fall for us to share. |
DC Universe Classics > Any validity to this presumably "official" photo floating around showing Wonder Woman with yellow armor and blue bracelets (versus gold and silver)?
Sorry, we can’t comment on unannounced product or decos. We are always working on new looks and decos but can only share them with the public when we have sign off from our licensor partners. |

06.30.10 :: WONDER WOMAN'S NEW COSTUME |
 On Tuesday, June 29, 2010, DC Comics unveiled a new costume for Wonder Woman to coincide with the re-numbering of her comic book for issue #600, which hit comic shops on June 30, 2010. >> Learn more about the new costume
Since the unveiling, I've been asked by many fans, collectors and media outlets about my thoughts on the redesign, so I thought I'd share some of them here.
We've seen so many incarnations of Diana over the years through DC Comics' Multiverse, various cross-title story arcs, artist-specific interpretations and Elseworld's series, that honestly, I'm sort of numb to seeing her in different looks. I think the re-numbering and introducing a new "urban-chic" look will offer Diana some added visibility in the marketplace, and Jim Lee's new costume design is what we'd probably see in a live-action film if it ever comes to fruition. This costume is much more of a departure from her classic wardrobe and seems more like a secret identity or what we might see in a fashion magazine featuring a street-wear look "inspired by Wonder Woman".
Actually, when I first saw Jim Lee's new costume design for Wonder Woman, I instantly thought "hey, it's Cher!" (see right)
I have been a Wonder Woman fan and collector for my entire life. Like many, my first exposure to the character was through television in the mid-1970s with Lynda Carter's iconic portrayal as well as in the Super Friends! cartoon series. Being an artist, my first attraction to the character was visual. I was instantly amazed by the costume inspired by elements of the
American Flag. As I continued to enjoy the character and strived to learn more, I realized that I enjoy Wonder Woman
the most, because she is one of the only super heroes that achieved the moniker because of her ability and values.
In Issue #600, writer J. Michael Straczynski and artist Don Kramer give us an introduction to the "new" Wonder Woman with a retelling of her origin story and a glimpse at the journey she took to become the woman she is today. The New York Times explains: "In the reimagining of her story, Wonder Woman, instead of growing up on Paradise Island with her mother, Queen Hippolyta, and her Amazon sisters, is smuggled out as a baby when unknown forces destroy her home and slaughter its inhabitants." It's obvious this is an alternate timeline and we are seeing a different Wonder Woman than we are used to. It is a bit strange whenever Diana's classic costume is temporarily changed in the comic books - but it's happened many times over the years for different story arcs and it has always gone back to "normal" eventually. This particular change has received a lot of hype because of how it's been promoted in conjunction with the re-numbering of the comic book. But I think it's important that people remember that this new costume is a feature of this particular story arc where Diana is not her usual self; so why would she have her usual costume?
As such, I really don't see the new costume affecting the collectibles market very much. I know we'll still be seeing classic Bronze Age Wonder Woman like we always have inspired by the iconic 1982 DC Comics Style Guide. Warner Bros. Consumer Products markets their licensed properties for the largest population of consumers and rarely uses artist-specific renditions for mass-market merchandise anyway. DC Direct, on the other hand will most likely offer an action figure with the new look at some point - and I say bring it on!
I've followed the character through many incarnations - all of which have somehow found their way back to the iconic version we all love. However, my favorite costume/character redesign to-date has been by the incredible artist Terry Dodson. His redesign was introduced with the relaunch of the Wonder Woman comic book in 2007.
Even if this new look and character back-story stick around for a while, I'll stay along for the ride. But I know it's not going to be like this forever.
Thanks for reading!

03.15.10 :: ASK MATTY - MATTEL Q&A ANSWERS FOR 5/15 |
Special thanks to Matty Mattel for taking the time to answer these questions: |
DC Universe > We've heard from our Australian friends that apparently their local retail and comic shops can't order the DC Universe line directly from Mattel due to international licensing restrictions. If true, are there any plans to implement international shipping on MattyCollector.com or through a retail/e-tail distribution partner in Australia? |
Logistics like this are something Mattel has very little control over. It is why DCUC figure box sets, and the individual figures coming soon, are available on Mattycollector.com. |
DC Universe Classics > Will the "Secret Identities" be continuing with female figures? |
It’s very possible, but nothing to announce quite yet. |
DC Universe Classics > It's been announced that we will see a Modern "unclothed" Cheetah figure - thank you! Understanding that Wave 13 with Classic and Modern Cheetah (clothed) is just starting to hit, do you anticipate implementing the unclothed version as a Wave 13 chase/variant or reserving her for a future Wave specifically?
We do have very specific plans for this deco variant but are not ready to announce it yet! Stay tuned. |

LYNDA CARTER AS WONDER WOMAN BUST
In honor of DC Comics' 75th Anniversary, this Lynda Carter as Wonder Woman Bust completes the trio with Christopher Reeve as Superman and Michael Keaton as Batman. We are advocating strongly with DC Direct to change the color of the bracelets to gold so the bust is show-accurate. Additionally, this bust will include a wire lasso (not the gold string shown). 01.30.10 :: ASK MATTY - MATTEL Q&A ANSWERS FOR 2/1 |
Special thanks to Matty Mattel for taking the time to answer these questions: |
We are so excited to see the amazing 12" General Zod Mattycollector.com exclusive, so we find ourselves asking - can a 6" or 12" Lynda Carter as Wonder Woman figure be far behind? |
There are no plans right now but it is certainly something we would look into. |
Fans are thrilled with DC Universe Classics: Wave 13 including Cheetah (Classic and Modern) and Donna Troy - thank you! Are you considering other Wonder Woman allies and adversaries for future waves? Any hints would be much appreciated! |
Yes, we are looking at more Wonder Woman characters for future waves but do not have enough details locked down to offer any hints quite yet! Stay tuned. |
| With the exciting news about the Justice League Unlimited line continuing into 2010, could this mean more Wonder Woman redecos after the Eclipsed version? |
It very well could. Wonder Woman was a major character in the show and we will do our best to keep the main characters available in original and new decos that are collector-friendly. |
| Any chance that some of the other Wonder Woman related characters from Justice League Unlimited will get figures? Fans would love to see Hippolyta, Fury, Steve Trevor, Circe, Ares, Angle Man, Dr. Cyber. |
Those are all great choices, but we are just not ready to confirm anything yet. Keep an eye out for the latest JLU figure news from our NYTF Collector Night on February 14th! (NOTE: ExperienceTheWonder.com is covering Toy Fair 2010 and will be attending the Mattel Collector Night! We'll be posting all our Toy Fair coverage right here in "The Latest" upon our return on 2/16!) |
| Fans love knowing who sculpted their favorite figures and we're so pleased that The Four Horsemen are credited for the amazing DC Universe Classics line. We'd also love to know the sculptor(s) for the Infinite Heroes Wonder Woman figures - both “Crisis” and “DVD” versions please! Understanding the standard DCIH female body and unique Wonder Woman heads may have been sculpted by different artists or teams, any information you are willing to share would be much appreciated! |
Both of those figures were sculpted by internal Mattel talent. Sorry, we can’t give out specifics on our talent!

12.01.09 :: ASK MATTY - MATTEL Q&A ANSWERS FOR 12/1 |
Special thanks to Matty Mattel for taking the time to answer these questions:
Were there/are there plans for a Wonder Woman “DVD” Infinite Heroes 3-pack similar to the Batman: Gotham Night and Superman/Batman: Public Enemies 3-pack? If not, is there a chance for a re-issue of the DVD-style Wonder Woman on a single card?
Nope. This figure is exclusive to the DVD release, so no plans for a 3 pack or a single re-release.
You have mentioned before we could see female characters in the Batman: The Brave and The Bold 2-packs. Even though Wonder Woman cannot be included on the series (according to our sources) – is she eligible for a figure in this line?
No, she is not eligible for this line as she is not part of the show.
Is the DC Super Friends (toddler) line continuing? If so, is Wonder Woman in the line-up somewhere?
No plans right now, but we’ll keep you posted!

11.16.09 :: ASK MATTY - MATTEL Q&A ANSWERS FOR 11/16 |
Special thanks to Matty Mattel for taking the time to answer these questions:
Wonder-fans are anxiously anticipating the release of the two 2009 holiday exclusive 6-packs including Wonder Woman: Target’s Justice League “Eclipsed” and Walmart’s Infinite Heroes “OMAC Attack”. Understanding that distribution, stocking and availability can take a few weeks and vary by region/store, can you give us a general idea of when these packs will start shipping to their respective retailers?
Both of these packs are just starting to ship. You should see them throughout the holidays. >> More information & photos here
Can we expect to see Wonder Woman included in an early Wave of the new line: World’s Greatest Super Heroes?
I am looking to add Wonder Woman to the Retro Action 8” cloth line, but at this time I cannot announce any figures beyond the first wave.
Since the recent release of the DC Direct Wonder Woman 1:6 Scale Deluxe Collector figure, Wonder-fans are more eager than ever for a “Giants Of Justice” Wonder Woman. If this line is continuing, and with Toys R Us’ new pre-order system, could we see a TRU exclusive GOJ Wonder Woman if there is enough fan interest through confirmed pre-orders?
I’d love to do a Giants of Justice Wonder Woman figure, and if it happens I’ll let you know!
Justice League Unlimited Fan Collection: Since we recently enjoyed the release of a Wonder Pig figure from the episode “This Little Piggy", can we expect a show-accurate Circe in an upcoming Wave to complete that story?
Circe would be awesome, but no plans quite yet for this mistress of magic!
Are you considering another DC Universe Classics “Variant” Wonder Woman - possibly with a cape and redeco/battle-armor?
Yes, in time the plan is to redo most of the big guns in multiple outfits including our favorite Amazon Princess.
