BATMAN: THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD - SEASON ONE, VOLUME ONE
Release Date: August 17, 2010

Batman wings into an exciting new era, teaming with a mighty honor roll of DC Comics Super Heroes in this action-packed series. Through the show's first 13 Animated Adventures in this 2-disc Collection, the Dark Knight allies with Aquaman, Plastic Man, Blue Beetle, Red Tornado, Green Arrow, Wildcat, Deadman, Bronze Tiger and The Atom to take on an array of evildoers ranging from mad scientists to intergalactic crooks, from power-mad dictators to out-of-control teenagers, He even travels to a parallel world and battles the villainous Owlman! In this cool, cutting-edge and often funny series, bringing back old-school comic book styling and dry wit to crimefighting, Batman faces any peril - including other heroes stealing the show - in his relentless pursuit of justice. Episodes include: "Rise of the Blue Beetles", "Terror on Dinosaur Island", "Evil Under the Sea", "Invasion of the Secret Santas", "Day of the Dark Knight!", "Enter the Outsiders!", "Dawn of the Dead Man!", "Fall of the Blue Beetle!", "Journey to the Center of the Bat!", "The Eyes of Despero!", "Return of the Five Fearsome Fangs!", "Deep Cover the Batman!", and "Game Over for Owlman!".

There's a lot packed into each of the (13) 30-minute episodes of Batman: The Brave and the Bold - Season One, Volume One. They each include an excellent screenplay that balances kid-friendly themes with sophistication and comedy that get better with every episode, excellent cinematography that seems so perfectly storyboarded in advance that it plays out like a big-budget action film, and crisp, clean animation with bright colors, dramatic scale and perspective that showcases its depth and subtleties in every frame. The stories are well-paced and team Batman with one or more DC Comics heroes - both well known and more obscure. Scenes are played against a carefully orchestrated soundtrack that moves from vintage lounge, to big band, to swing, to epic blockbuster score and back again. Evoking some of the camp of the 1960s live-action show through a classic vibe with a modern twist, we also enjoy amazing freeze-frame action sequences that nod to the comic origins of our heroes and villains that appear as if they are frozen on the comic book page. They allow for additional impact of intricate fight scenes and bring focus to some very funny visual cues that may not otherwise be caught in a rapid exchange at full speed. The widescreen animation and surround soundtrack were rendered flawlessly on my 50” Samsung HD flat-screen television, played though a Samsung progressive scan DVD player with Dolby Digital and DTS. If the classic Super Friends were created today, this is exactly the format of animation and storytelling they should receive. In fact, despite a certain Amazon Princess not appearing in the series (yet) - it basically IS a modern day Super Friends. It brings all the appeal and charm of its predecessor, while borrowing from the expanded character universe format of the Justice League Unlimited while taking advantage of a more intelligent youth audience and modern technology that can amp up the production value. Batman: The Brave and the Bold is a wonderful viewing experience for anyone who loves DC Super Heroes, superb animation and great storytelling. Start your collection with Season One: Volume One today!

PEANUTS 1970s COLLECTION - VOL. 2
Release Date: May 1, 2010

Warner Home Video brings six more beloved Peanuts primetime specials to DVD, in an all-new, re-mastered collection. The compilation consists of a series of specials that were broadcast between 1975 and 1979, several of which were either nominated for or received Emmy Awards. What A Nightmare, Charlie Brown, included in the set, is new to DVD. A follow-up to Peanuts 1970s Collection Volume 1, this set offers a series of specials which were broadcast during the second half of the ’70s. Additionally, this collection also includes an engaging bonus featurette.

Growing up in the 1970s the now-classic Peanuts specials were standard annual fare in our house! Every year we knew that around certain holidays there would be a related Peanuts special. This 2-disc collection with 148 minutes does not disapoint! The animation is crisp and the color saturation has been improved from the original transfer. The Vince Guaraldi soundtracks are brilliant as always, and provide a cool jazz backdrop to the pleasing stories and visual imagery from the world of Charles Shultz. However, It's Arbor Day, Charlie Brown is the last special to feature Guaraldi's work, as he passed away that year. As usual, the one-up antics between Snoopy and Woodstock are hilarious and the familiar voice cast does an excellent job.

Episodes in this collection include: Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown (1975), You’re a Good Sport, Charlie Brown (1975), It’s Arbor Day, Charlie Brown (1976), What a Nightmare, Charlie Brown (1978), It’s Your First Kiss, Charlie Brown (1977), You’re the Greatest, Charlie Brown (1979)

Special Features include: You’re Groovy, Charlie Brown: A Look at Peanuts in the ’70s - a look at the daily work rituals and comic strip techniques of Charles Schulz.

SATURDAY MORNING CARTOONS: 1980'S
Release Date: May 4, 2010

Action. Intrigue. Celebrity stars. Adorable critters. Dude, Saturday mornings are awesome! Be a couch potatoe and relive the trippendicular 'toons of the way cool '80s! Go mental with Martin Short's immortal Ed Grimley, kick butt with Chuck Norris and save the day with Mister T. Take it medieval with "Dragon's Lair" and "Galter and the Golden Lance", then travel to an earth reborn from cosmic destruction in "Thundarr the Barbarian". For laughs, Tex Avery lends his genius to "The Kwicky Koala Show" (Avery's final work), and "The Flintstone Kids" will crack you up. Need to chill? Cuddle up to "The Biskitts" and "Monchichis" for mega-cute action. No kidding: this wicked 2-Disc Collection is totally boss.

As with the 1960s and 1970s editions of this DVD series, upon loading, the disc offers a main menu with both Play All and Episodes options. If you select Play All, the disc begins with the first episode on the disc – not the "Saturday Morning Wake Up Call" as on the earlier collections. Actually for me, this is a welcome change as I like getting right to the shows! The 1980s were such a fun time for cartoons on television. In 1981, when I was only 7 years old, I got a baby sister – so cartoons were always on the television in our house! I am a huge cartoon fan and I was surprised at some of the more obscure cartoons included on this collection that I had never seen before.

The collection includes 11 classic Ruby-Spears and Hanna-Barbera shows: Goldie Gold & Action Jack, Chuck Norris Karate Commandos (with live-action intros by Chuck Norris himself!), The Completely Mental Misadventures of Ed Grimley (starring Martin Short), The Flintstone Kids (segmented into episode sections called Captain Caveman and Son, Dino’s Dilemmas and Flintstone Funnies), Mr. T (with live-action intros/outros by Mr. T himself – in very tight pants, “I must say”), The Biskitts, The Monchhichis, Galtar and the Golden Lance, Dragon’s Lair, Thundarr the Barbarian and The Kwicky Koala Show.

Overall, the transfer, clarity, picture and mono soundtrack conveyed well through my surround sound receiver and HD television. The soundtracks were synced very well including heavily-syntheisized orchestral tracks and sound effects that were so prominent in 1980s television. Chapter marks are placed well and segment each 23 minute episode into 4ths. Not realizing it at the time, but re-watching these cartoons through a different lens, it’s amazing how many classic cartoons borrow themes from each other! While enjoying this collection I found myself being reminded of story lines and characters found in He-Man, She-Ra, The Smurfs, Scooby-Doo, Thundercats, etc. I really love these collections because they compile the best cartoons of my youth into one collection that is fun to watch ANY day of the week!

SUPERMAN: THE COMPLETE ANIMATED SERIES
Release Date: November 24, 2009

The creative team behind the Emmy Award-winning Batman: The Animated Series chronicles the adventures of Superman, the legendary superhero, as he battles the forces of villainy and continues his quest for "truth, justice and the American way."

Superman: The Complete Animated Series offers another amazing cartoon work from Warner Bros. Animation and artist/producer/director extraordinaire Bruce Timm. This 7-disc collection, presented in its original 4x3 ratio, begins with a 3-part origin story where we are introduced to all major characters for the series. As the episodes continue, we see a melodic evolution of character development through several story arcs and see how they play a role in the mythos and developed into their alter-egos (example: Metallo). The stereo sound quality supports a great soundtrack that seems heavily influenced by – and affectionately recalls the emotions of – the original John Williams soundtrack for the live-action Superman movies starring Christopher Reeve. Speaking of…one of several humorous and frequent internal references has Martha Kent pondering what to name young Kal-El after he is found on their farm in Smallville and she says “what about Christopher”. Clearly an homage to Christopher Reeve. The video transfer for this collection is crisp and clear with very sharp audio sync and well-balanced sound effects and dialogue. The crisp “DCAU-style” foreground animation plays well against beautiful hand-painted backgrounds. This special edition collects the original DVD releases without too many changes. This includes the full color Disc 1 and 2-sided supplemental discs for each of the seasons and a bonus disc of special features – all contained in special collector packaging with a holographic slip-case. If you enjoy Batman: The Animated Series, Justice League: The Animated Series or any of the more recent DC Universe feature-length animated films, then Superman: The Complete Animated Series is a must-own!

>> Watch A Clip from Valley of the Dinosaurs episode “Such Luck”

Our review for both collections:
Upon loading, the disc offers a main menu with both Play All and Episodes options. If you select Play All, the disc begins with "Saturday Morning Wake Up Call" - a vintage-style overture with an announcer who lines-up the episodes you are about to see, describing the characters and the plot for each over a novelty soundtrack. These nostalgic cartoons - some I almost forgot existed - were a wonderful walk down memory lane. Being a child of the 70s, I knew most of the 60's cartoons from syndication and grew-up with most of the 70s cartoons. There were a few I had forgotten about (Hair Bear Bunch) and some I was watching for the first time (The Adventures of Gulliver) and thoroughly enjoyed. Overall, the transfer, clarity, picture and mono soundtrack conveyed well through my surround sound receiver and HD television. Some of the more obscure cartoons did seem to suffer from pixilation with rapid movement, but on a smaller television or computer, I don't imagine this would be as noticeable. The soundtracks were synced very well including orchestral track and sound effects. The only exception was the intro and outro for The Bugs Bunny Show which suffered from really poor visual and audio quality. However, there is a disclaimer when the disc loads that some footage could not be saved and thus archival footage has been used to replace it in these instances, so at least it was addressed prior to watching the scene. Chapter marks are placed well and jumps to the next episode for shorter cartoons, while segmenting longer 23 minute episodes into 4ths. I love these collections because they compile the best cartoons of my youth into one collection that is fun to watch ANY day of the week!

PLASTIC MAN: THE COMPLETE COLLECTION
Release Date: October 20, 2009

This show was shown right after The Superfriends on the ABC Network. It featured various adventures of the DC Comics superhero Plastic Man. This show featured many adventures in different segments: Plastic Man, Baby Plas, Plastic Family, Mighty Man & Yukk, Fangface and Fangpuss, and Rickety Rocket.

Plastic Man: The Complete Collection offers an expertly crafted cartoon work from Ruby Spears Productions. Joe Ruby and Ken Spears started out at Hanna-Barbera and later created the Scooby Doo Series for them before starting their own animation studio in 1977. As such, many of the tricks and techniques we love about Scooby-Doo and other Hanna-Barbera cartoons are prominent in Ruby Spears Productions such as Plastic Man. This includes great foreground character design and animation, detailed hand-painted backgrounds, excellent (and very familiar) voice-cast and a well orchestrated soundtrack. If you like Scooby-Doo and the SuperFriends series, you will love Plastic Man! Plastic Man is a member of the Justice League of America and while not included in the SuperFriends series, he is well-deserving as the lead role in this cartoon series. In DC Comics continuity as well as later animated series such as Justice League Unlimited and Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Plastic Man is included as a core member of the Justice League of America. In his own series, however his sidekicks and supporting cast consist primarily of a platinum blonde southern belle and very love struck girlfriend (?) Penny, as well as the clumsy but loveable (Hawaiian?) Hula Hula. They assist Plastic Man in his adventures and are always there with the Plastic Plane and its various gadgets to help Plastic Man save the day! The writing is well-done and speaks clearly to the younger audience, and the humor that is peppered throughout reminds me of how they treated "the Flash" in the Justice League. As much as you might love to see what Zan and Jayne of the SuperFriends are going to turn into next, or what shape Green Lantern's power ring will assume, the same is true for Plastic Man. Except anything goes and he can stretch, bend and warp into any shape from a giant spring to a speedboat! Some of his moves actually pre-date what we'll later see in the Inspector Gadget series! The DVD transfer of these classic cartoons was very well done - the picture is very clean and the mono audio well-synced. I particularly enjoyed Episode 2 where we see Penny saves the day and lasso Meteor Man. I could not help being reminded of Wonder Woman in the SuperFriends!

TOM & JERRY'S GREATEST CHASES: VOLUME 3
Release Date: October 13, 2009

Everyone’s favorite cat and mouse are back with 14 shorts from the original popular cartoon series. Volume 3 finds Tom and Jerry engaging in some of their greatest chases ever! This fast-paced collection serves up 14 more of this dynamic duo’s funniest faceoffs that the whole family will love. Episodes include: Cat Napping, The Flying Cat, The Two Mousketeers, Smitten Kitten, Baby Butch, Designs on Jerry, The Pecos Pest, Touche Pussy Cat!, The Flying Sorceress, Blue Cat Blues, The Night Before Christmas, The Bowling Alley-Cat, Fine Feathered Friend and Puttin’ on the Dog.

I have always been a fan of classic Tom & Jerry cartoons, and this single-disc collection with over 1 hour of classic episodes does not dissapoint! In these episodes, the character animation is crisp, but there is a fair amount of dust most noticeable in four of the episodes. But for vintage cartoons like these, the color and clarity overall are excellent and the transfer is much crisper than later cartoon collections. The mono soundtrack is perfectly synced which is crucial in Tom & Jerry since all of the movement is set to music and the visual gags rely on precise sound effects and orchestral hits for full effect. I am particulaly pleased that this collection includes The Night Before Christmas and it will be a treat to re-watch that as the holiday season approaches each year. This is another collection that is a sure treat for kids of all ages!

YELLOWSTONE: BATTLE FOR LIFE
Release Date: September 29, 2009

Yellowstone is no ordinary wilderness, it is the world's first national park: a lost world of vast plains and endless forests defended on all sides by towering mountains, home to America's last great bison herds, the grizzly bear and realm of the wolf. It is the most extensive thermal area on earth with more than 10,000 boiling springs, fumaroles and bubbling mud pits and more geysers than the rest of the world put together. It's these strange natural wonders that first made Yellowstone famous and still make it unique today. This landmark series reveals the grandeur of this unique place as its animals struggle to survive over the course of the vividly changing seasons.

Yellowstone: Battle for Life is a three-part nature documentary. Each 50-minute episode is a season: “Winter,” “Summer,” and “Autumn.” Over the course of three-hours you will see how the animals that inhabit Yellowstone National Park have to adjust to the changing seasons every year and how their threats and eating patterns change with the weather. The focus on specific groups of animals and they are followed through each season. The HD video is stunning and all of the landscape and animals are presented crystal clear. The audio is in DTS 5.1 surround so you actually "feel" like you are standing in the park watching (and hearing) what is happening around you. If you like documentaries - particularly about nature - then Yellowstone: Battle For Life is a must-see!

SCOOBY DOO, WHERE ARE YOU! SEASON 1, VOLUME 3 – HELLO MUMMY
Release Date: September 1, 2009

When a stash of cash is found inside a violin case, Scooby-Doo helps Mystery, Inc. “string up” the counterfeiting puppeteers in The Rage Backstage. The kooky crimefighters then encounter Bedlam in the Bigtop at a jinxed circus. Junkies! Will they discover who’s behind the mask of the Ghost Clown? More ghouls await – including Dracula, the Wolf man and Frankenstein’s Monster – when Fred, Velma, Daphne, Shaggy and Scooby-Doo take on A Gaggle of Galloping Ghosts. Finally, the gang unravels the case of Scooby-Doo and a Mummy, Too. People start turning into stone statues and our heroes must find three mystical coins that unlock an ancient tomb…before the mummy spells doom!

As noted in a previous review, I have always been a huge fan of Scooby Doo and this single-disc collection continues the fun with episodes 9-12 from Season One. As an artist, I am always impressed with the beautiful backgrounds in Hanna-Barbera cartoons and Scooby-Doo certainly gives the artists a chance to create some amazing visual effects with paint! In these episodes, the character animation is crisp, but there is a lot of dust in the transparent areas which are especially noticeable against darker backgrounds. In one scene in Scooby-Doo and a Mummy, Too, the soundtrack was slightly delayed, but it corrected itself in the next scene. Again, these episodes feature the original voice cast with several of Hanna-Barbera's better known voice actors for the secondary characters. Special features include various trailers and a bonus episode from the Shaggy & Scooby-Doo Get a Clue series – High Society Scooby. This is another collection that is a sure treat for kids of all ages!

SUPER FRIENDS: THE LOST EPISODES
Release Date: August 11, 2009

More information and images: >> Official ETW Exhibit

Synopsis:
Powerful super heroes Batman, Robin, Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Wonder Twins Zan and Jayna and their rascally blue space monkey Gleek battle evil, protect humanity and save the world from unthinkable dangers in these 24 action-packed adventures. These cool cartoon actionfests showcase a gallery of DC Comics heroes and fan-favorite villains like Brainiac and Mr. Mxyzptlk, plus the Hanna-Barbera-originated hero El Dorado. Produced after the SuperFriends show ended its run, these treasures were “lost” for more than a decade until they were shown as part of The Superman/Batman Adventures series. It’s a Deluxe 2-Disc Collector’s Set with Bonus Downloadables – your own pieces of super hero comic book history!

History:
After the 1980-1982 SuperFriends seasons concluded, Hanna-Barbera had created a syndication package of the earlier SuperFriends series, and these were picked up by various stations across the United States and were typically broadcast on weekday afternoons. Not wishing to compete with the syndication programming, ABC dropped the series from the 1983–1984 Saturday morning television line-up, and for the second time in its run, SuperFriends was canceled.

However, during this period of time Hanna-Barbera continued to produce new episodes of the SuperFriends. In total, 24 of the "Lost Episodes" were animated but not aired in the United States that season. The series did appear in Australia uninterrupted. Three of these episodes were aired when SuperFriends returned to Saturday morning ABC television the following year. The remainder of the episodes finally aired in syndication a year later as part of The Superman/Batman Adventures series.

Review:
Each of the 24 episodes – presented in full-screen format - features three, 7-minute shorts following the format of the 5th Season (1980-1982): the five original SuperFriends in various team-ups or ensemble adventures; the Wonder Twins and Gleek; team-up of an original and new SuperFriends members (such as Wonder Woman and Samurai). In these episodes, the animation is superior to the earlier series with noticeable efforts made with character lip sync and color accuracy. While a common occurrence in the earlier series, very few mis-colorations were seen in these episodes and when seen, were limited to subtle errors like an inverted Bat-symbol for only a few frames. An interesting observation is that Wonder Woman’s lasso-throw from the opening sequence is re-used against different backdrops in every episode that she appears in this series.

The transfer and restoration efforts are excellent on this release. Watching the DVD on a 50” Samsung HD flat-screen television, played though a Sony progressive scan DVD player with Dolby Digital and DTS, the colors are bright, the animation is very crisp and the picture is extremely clean. English mono audio remains very clear and the balance of character voices mix perfectly against the classic orchestral soundtrack and sound effects. The original voice cast continues for these episodes featuring fan-favorite Shannon Farnon in the role of Wonder Woman.

The bonus downloadable SuperFriends comic books were a joy to read and are high-resolution scans of the original publication that have been compiled into a multi-page PDF format.

SuperFriends: The Lost Episodes arrives on DVD on August 11, 2009. After this heroic collection, Super-fans across the globe will be anxiously waiting for Warner Home Video to continue releasing the remaining seasons to complete their SuperFriends DVD library!

TORCHWOOD: CHILDREN OF EARTH
Release Date: July 28, 2009

History:
The Torchwood Institute is the name of a secret organization set up to combat alien threats to the human race. Initially founded by Queen Victoria herself, Torchwood's head office was based in the Canary Wharf tower in London's docklands. However, a devastating alien attack [shown in the Doctor Who episode 'Doomsday'] left virtually the entire staff dead, the organization without a leader, and the tiny Cardiff field office left to defend humanity on its own. Well, almost on its own... Torchwood's small Cardiff office (known as 'The Hub') was established at the end of the 19th Century, on top of a rift in space and time. People, objects and creatures from across the Universe and from all periods of time often find themselves 'washed up' in Cardiff - and it's Torchwood's job to assess if they pose a threat to humanity, and to either capture or destroy them if they do or to take care of them if they don't. Torchwood often works in partnership with UNIT, the Unified Intelligence Taskforce - a large-scale international armed force with many decades of experience in fighting alien invasions of Earth.

Synopsis:
In this new series, re-join Captain Jack, Gwen Cooper and Ianto Jones, who are still coming to terms with the death of two of their closest friends, Tosh and Owen. This time the Torchwood team are faced with their fiercest threat to date - one which throws the future of Torchwood and the entire human race spiraling into danger. They battle against the odds but do they stand a chance of saving mankind? Go on Torchwood's most adrenalin-fuelled, high-octane adventure yet when children all over the Earth stop moving, stop playing, stop laughing, stop everything, and begin to speak with the same voice, announcing the imminent arrival of a new alien threat.

Review:
Torchwood: Children Of Earth is quite simply one of the best conspiracy thrillers I have ever seen – and that includes feature films and television. The edge of your seat story - presented in breathtaking widescreen format and filmed in HD with beautiful arial views of London and Cardiff throughout - takes you on an exciting fast-paced thrill ride that cleverly delves into the ‘what-ifs” and “how tos” of a modern-day alien threat with a brilliant mix of action, suspense and, yes – a few scarier moments that make you jump a little in your seat!

Torchwood has always been much “darker” than Doctor Who with more violence, scary images and sexual content. This epic miniseries is darker than ever with the world’s children being used as a countdown device for the 456 – an alien race that visited Earth in 1965 and is “coming…back”. In a stirring scene inside Thames House where the 456 is contained, we learn what became of the 12 children that were sacrificed in 1965 and why the 456 is back for more – this time 10% of he world’s population of children. Demands are made, negotiations are ignored and the world’s leaders are faced with an impossible decision. Captain Jack Harkness and the Torchwood team want to help, but must do so through constantly increasing conflict as they are being hunted by the government they are trying to help, experience the tragic and surprising loss of a major character in the process, and face tougher decisions than ever before. There is a perfect mix of humor, sadness and action – as well as several scenes where the viewer uncomfortably finds themselves questioning “what would I do?” right along with the characters on screen.

I watched the entire 5 part series all in one sitting and that is completely the way to do it! Owning it on DVD is a must and I'll enjoy watching it again and again. From the writing and acting to production and visual effects, Torchwood: Children Of Earth is a masterpiece that earns every bit of the praise and accolades is has achieved.

DC UNIVERSE ANIMATED ORIGINAL MOVIE "GREEN LANTERN: FIRST FLIGHT"
Release Date: July 28, 2009

Synopsis:
When pilot Hal Jordan accepts a mysterious, powerful ring from a dying alien creature, it transforms him into a Green Lantern, one of an elite force of heroes who patrol the universe to ensure peace and justice under the leadership of the Guardians of the Universe. Unsure of their newest recruit, the Guardins assign Hal to their most-honored Green Lantern Sinestro for training, unaware that Sinestro wants to overthrow the guardians and create a new order he’ll control. It’s a battle of might and willpower as Hal must prove his worth by defending Sinestro to save the Green Lantern Corps. Voiced by a stellar cast including Christopher Meloni, Victor Garber, Tricia Helfer and Michael Madsen, this DC Universe original animated adventure bursts with action-packed shakedowns, showdowns and spectacular visuals as Green Lantern uses his powers and imagination to make the impossible real!

Review - 2-Disc Special Edition:
Let me begin by saying that as a Wonder Woman fan, a lot of my comments will be in comparison to the Wonder Woman DC Universe Original Animated Movie that was released on March 3, 2009. For our review and loads of extras, check out our Wonder Woman DVD section.

Green Lantern: First Flight is generally a well made piece of animation that should appeal to a wide range of audiences, particularly DC Comics fans who have a basic knowledge of Green Lantern. Like many, I’d seen the origin story interpreted through animation before through the SuperFriends and Justice League animated series, so I expected to see it retold here. The set-up is done fairly well and even viewers with little or no knowledge of the character are brought up to speed rather quickly. The story is fast-paced and played on a huge inter-galactic stage so there was plenty of opportunity for large-scale effects and fast-paced scenes. However, the overall production seemed lacking when compared to its predecessors. The animation itself was clean and certainly on-par with the Justice League animated series, but did not have as much detail or depth as in Wonder Woman. There were a lot of intricate character designs, but many of the backgrounds felt flat and overly simplistic and some of the computer generated effects (the battery) felt more like pre-production animatics than finished set pieces.

In general the voice talent for the main characters did a fine job. Often, when interacting with secondary characters, their exchanges felt forced and you could tell the actors were not in the studio at the same time and just “reading” their lines without much emotion. This is particularly evident in the bar scene with Labellas . I was also surprised at some of the sexual overtones and crude language which seemed to be included only for shock value and did not add much to the story.

I really liked the musical score and a lot of the electronic elements that were integrated to help achieve a more futuristic space odyssey feel. I heard musical sequences that were reminiscent of Doctor Who, 24, Star Wars and the Justice League animated series. The opening credits were a really nice touch that I felt was lacking on Wonder Woman to make it really feel like a feature film. It reminded me of the opening credits in the Superman movies!

In conclusion, as a DC Comics fan I enjoyed Green Lantern First Flight, but I’ll find my hand pulling Wonder Woman from the DVD shelf a lot more often!

WALLANDER: SIDETRACKED, FIREWALL, ONE STEP BEHIND
Release Date: June 2, 2009

Kenneth Branagh plays Swedish detective Kurt Wallander in three new crime dramas based on the best-selling books by Henning Mankell, an international publishing phenomenon with over 25 million copies sold worldwide. Sidetracked, Firewall, and One Step Behind follow Inspector Kurt Wallander - a disillusioned everyman - as he struggles against a rising tide of violence in the seemingly sleepy backwaters in and around Ystad in beautiful southern Sweden. Baffling crimes and apparently motiveless murders lead to surprising and shocking discoveries in these Swedish noir thrillers.

As a big fan of murder mysteries like Murder, She Wrote, Hetty Wainthropp Investigates, Poirot and Agatha Christie, Wallander gives us a surprisingly fresh take incorporating beautiful southern Sweden scenery and locations with modern day technology and investigative practices. Kenneth Branagh brings a dry wit to the role of Wallander and I found myself actually chuckling a few times at his interactions with his colleagues. I was surprised with some of the more graphic scenes, but it's all very stylized and only makes you "jump" for a moment. Each of the three episodes contained in this set are presented in anamorphic widescreen and a full 90 minutes, which is a treat for those who may feel that other prime-time mystery series are a bit rushed to fit everything into their 1-hour (including commercials) runtime. SCOOBY DOO, WHERE ARE YOU! SEASON 1, VOLUME 2 - BUMP IN THE NIGHT
Release Date: May 5, 2009

Scooby-Doo Where Are You! Vol. 2 sniffs out and serves up Episodes 5-8 - in the order aired - of Scooby-Doo's original Saturday morning series. When prize-winning show dogs begin to disappear, the crafty canine becomes a Decoy for a Dognapper. A spell-casting ghost goes a-haunting until Daphne, Velma, Freddy and Shaggy figure out What the Hex Going On? It's far from all quiet on the set when Daphne's moviemaker uncle hires the gang as extras in a horror flick and they soon learn you Never Ape an Ape Man. And then what could be scarier than exploring an abandoned amusement park with a short-circuited robot named Charley in charge in Foul Play in Funland. For cheerful chills and frightful laughs galore, this is a rrrun-rrriled ride!

I have always been a huge fan of Scooby Doo and these are some of my favorite classic episodes. The animation and backgrounds are bright and crisp and the soundtrack is balanced and clear. It's interesting to enjoy hearing some of the subtleties in the audio track that were not easily heard through the television speakers when these episodes originally aired. Unlike later incarnations, these episodes feature the original voice cast with several of Hanna-Barbera's better known voice actors for the secondary characters. I first tried to preview this on my HP w2338h HD computer monitor powered by an Jaton Video 498PCI-DLP GeForce 9500 GT 1GB 128-bit DDR2 Video Card, but there was some linear distortion in the foreground animation and the soundtrack was not syncing with the animation. Presumably this is to do with my video card "smoothing" settings taking over. Once previewing on a regular DVD player, none of this was an issue. As with most Hanna-Barbera classic animation this DVD is a sure treat for kids of all ages!

FOLLOW THAT BIRD (25TH ANNIVERSARY DELUXE EDITION)
Release Date: March 24, 2009

Follow that bird - Big Bird, of course - for an imaginative, magical treat starring the cast of TVs Sesame Street in their first movie. Jim Hensons beloved characters Kermit, Oscar, Bert, Ernie and Cookie Monster plus other Sesame Street regulars join Big Bird in a big-hearted, cross-country adventure. A meddling social worker sends poor Big Bird off to live with a feathered foster family in Illinois. But try as he might, he doesnt fit in and runs away to return to Sesame Street. Can his old friends find him before he runs “afowl” of trouble en route? Be on the lookout and be there for big entertainment from guest stars Chevy Chase, John Candy, Sandra Bernhard, Waylon Jennings and more.

This movie is a classic that I enjoyed growing up and sharing with my younger sisters. While it certainly helps to be familiar with Sesame Street charaters circa the mid-1980s, anyone should be able to enjoy Follow That Bird. This is just a fun movie that simply entertains anyone watching. Like the Muppet movies, this one features several celebrity cameos. Chevy Chase amuses in a brief appearance as a newscaster reminiscent of his "Saturday Night Live" Weekend Update shtick. John Candy also shows up shortly as a state trooper. Country musician Waylon Jennings gets a little more screentime and the honor of performing "Ain't No Road Too Long", among the most memorable of the film's six spunky original tunes. There are also some very funny moments in offbeat dialogue and unexpected reactions. There is action and suspense balancing the relaxed, low-key feel of the whole movie. Highly recommended!

THE REAL ADVENTURES OF JONNY QUEST (SEASON 1, VOL. 1)
Release Date: February 17, 2009

In this thrilling reinvention of the classic animated series, adventurous teen Jonny teams up with his scientist father, Benton Quest, bodyguard Race Bannon, Dr. Quest’s paranormally powered assistant Hadji – and a new character, Race’s smart and intrepid daughter Jessie. Circling the globe in a cool armada of air, land and sea vehicles to unravel mysteries, uncover strange phenomena and face danger head-on, the Quest crew always goes where the action is. That can be our real world – or the dazzling virtually reality world of domain called Questworld, rendered via groundbreaking-in-its-time computer animation.

This is my first exposure to Jonny Quest, as I never really followed the original series. I was particularly impressed with the crisp animation, detailed backgrounds and cinematic style orchestral score. Each episode looks and sounds more like a feature length animated movie than a ½ hour cartoon. The episodes - definitely intended for a young-adult to adult audience as there is some violence and extreme action sequences - were fast-paced and held my interest. The brief CGI Questworld sequences offer a stark contrast of textures and movement from the linear animation throughout the rest of the scenes. Questworld reminded me a lot of "Reboot" (a popular CGI cartoon than ran from 1994 - 2001). At the closing credits, I was yearning for the next adventure to begin! This DVD turned me into a Jonny Quest fan and I plan to find the original series on which this is based as well!

THE SMURFS: VOLUME 1 - "TRUE BLUE FRIENDS"
Release Date: March 3, 2009

The Smurfs are one of my favorite childhood cartoons and this DVD offers up 5 classic episodes from Season 2. For those of you that don’t know…The Smurfs are a group of over 100 bluish, three-apple tall creatures who live in the mushroom homes of Smurf Village. They are led by 543-year-old Papa Smurf (who doesn't look a day over 530). Their lives would be perfect were it not for the villainous Gargamel, a wizard who spends his days trying to capture them to eat, turn into gold, or for other evil reason. Gargamel's cat Azrael adds to the menace, always looking for a smurfalicious snack.

Season 2 introduced an expanded cast of Smurfs and human characters other than Gargamel. The animation in this DVD is crisp and the audio quality is clear. The selected episodes give the viewer a great perspective into Season 2 of the show and how the character universe continued to expand beyond Papa Smurf, Brainy, Hefty, Smurfette and a few others everyone knows. Special features include Meet the Smurfs - an interactive menu page with four selectable items that launch videos of your favorite Smurfs moments. This DVD is an excellent introduction to The Smurfs for kids of all ages!

ACE VENTURA JR: PET DETECTIVE
Release Date: March 3, 2009

"I will try to be normal" 12-year-old Ace Ventura Jr. promises. Thats cool, except whats normal for him is finding missing mutts, kidnapped kitties or gone gators and creating hilarious chaos every step of the way. Like father, like son, its in his nature to be a pet defective detective! And when a zoos baby panda is stolen and Aces mom is Suspect #1, our young hero sets out to clear the family name. Its a new generation of family fun and goof-brained comedy panda-monium as Ace Ventura Jr. (Josh Flitter of Nancy Drew and License to Wed) teams with adventurous girl-next-door Laura (Emma Lockhart) and nerdish gizmo-wiz A-Plus (Austin Rogers) to chase down leads and laughs. Ready for fun? Allriiiighty-then. Ace Jr. is on the case!

I’m a big fan of the original Ace Ventura movies so I was anxious to see how they would re-interpret the character for a younger audience. Josh Flitter plays Ace Ventura, Jr. and is surprisingly quick, witty and channels Jim Carrey’s original characterizations throughout the film. The production and editing are fast and creative, keeping the pace energetic and a young audience enthused. For me, the middle slowed a little and the end seemed to “wrap up” too quickly. But if you are in for a fun juvenile version of Ace Ventura, this movie is just the ticket!
